ONE’s Bantamweight Championship remains vacant after John Lineker vs. Fabricio Andrade was declared a No Contest in ONE on Prime Video 3 last Friday.
It was a tough outing for Lineker, who was stripped of the championship and kept 20 percent of his purse after losing weight for what should have been the first defense of his reign against Andrade. ‘Hands of Stone’ not only suffered from a potential orbital bone fracture, but also received one of the worst fouls of the year.
The first round started out somewhat tentative, with Andrade advancing and throwing kicks as Lineker circled away. ‘Wonder Boy’ discovered Lineker’s timing, connecting with sharp jabs and avoiding his opponent’s heavy punches. Near the midway point, Andrade landed a well-timed knee to the body that hurt Lineker. He took in her brief but revealing reaction and prepared to finish. After hitting Lineker with a straight left hand, Andrade was knocked down but got back to his feet and separated. Andrade connected with more jabs and left right hands, but Lineker responded with overhand lefts, one of which hit his fellow Brazilian before time expired.
A more aggressive Lineker targeted the body in the second round. Once he opened his head, the former ONE bantamweight champion would throw those overhands, but Andrade walked away from most of them. Lineker scored another takedown, using it to his advantage as he unleashed many shots on a grounded Andrade. As Andrade got back to his feet, he ate a massive left but recovered. In one of the final exchanges, Andrade hit Lineker with a left straight that immediately swelled his eye. Lineker was allowed to continue, but it would only be for a few more minutes.
Andrade hurt Lineker with a knee to the body, but when he was going to follow up with another, it landed on his groin. Lineker fell to the mat, writhing in pain and panting to the point where ONE officials had to bring a bucket to the cage in case he was going to vomit. The foul was so bad that Lineker’s cup was shattered. Although he used the allotted five minutes to try to recover, there was no way Lineker could continue. The fight was declared a No Contest, a disappointing ending to what was a highly entertaining outing.
