Actor chandler riggs will always be known as the youngest son of Rick Grimes from the series The Walking Dead. The actor started on the series early on and lasted eight seasons on the show before his untimely death, which was one of the most heartbreaking deaths for fans. While his character didn’t get to participate in this week’s finale as his character Carl Grimes, he actually returned as a background character that you probably didn’t even notice.
The actor was in town for the last few shooting dates and decided he wanted to visit his old friends on set and see the show on his last day. He told EW about the experience, explaining how it came to be:
Well, I heard that they were filming the last episode and I thought, “I feel like I should be there. It would be great to see all the old crew and old and new cast that are all there.” And basically, I felt like I should be there for it. So I texted executive producer Denise Huth and said, “Hey, can you tell me the last day of filming? I’d love to be there. I’ll be in Georgia and it would be great to get.” So she sent me the dates and I made the trip to Senoia, Georgia.
Continuous:
And apparently Denise hadn’t told anyone I was coming, and I didn’t realize that. [Laughs] So I introduced myself and Denise said to the rest of the cast, “So I told you I had a surprise for you on the last day. Here it is!” And I’m like, “Hey guys!” And it was so healthy.
When asked about the day, he explained:
I showed up early when they started filming because I had nothing else to do that day. So I thought, “Well, I’ll head down and be there all day.” And so, I was just hanging out in Video Village.
He didn’t plan on being in a scene, but the show’s director and longtime effects creator greg nicotero I told him to jump!
It was for one of their long shots, and they said, “We’re going to get you in there. Here!” I only had this shirt and jeans that I came down with. They took a hat from the wardrobe. It was like Father Gabriel’s hat! And they gave me a mattock and said, “Be part of the background for one of the last takes.” And they just dumped me in there, and I did a little bit of digging in the ground at the bottom. [Laughs] It was fun. It was just a quick thing before the rest of the day’s filming, so that was cool.
Norman Reeduswho plays Daryl on the series, said of Riggs’ return:
“It was great. They were trying to hide it in the scene, and I kept trying to nod my head like I was looking at it to get the audience’s attention and say, ‘Hey, there’s Chandler!’ Which I don’t think anyone really wanted me to do, but I thought it was fun, so I kept trying.”
I haven’t caught up on the season finale yet, so I haven’t seen the finale, but I’m glad to know to look for Riggs when I watch! I think it’s amazing that he got to be a part of this. I’m sure he made the feelings on set even more special that day.
Have you seen the end? Did you notice Riggs in the background?
