Technology will be victorious… vote in the May 21 elections, as it will play an important role in knowing 80% of the results about two hours after the polls close, at 9:00 p.m.
In the 1980s and 1990s, voters lined up in front of polling stations and waited until the early hours of the morning to find out the results of the polls. A nostalgic image for those who managed to live it.
Now, those times are gone forever, since the spectacularly developed technology has become an integral tool of the electoral process and allows us, almost in real time from the moment the polls close, to know with a large percentage and especially sure who will cut the thread first and where their rates will move.

Thanks to technology, then, around 9:00 p.m. next Sunday, before nightfall, we will know 80% of the results. This was revealed by Kyriakos Pierrakakis, the competent minister of the outgoing government.
Speaking to SKAI, the Digital Governance Minister said: “There will be 20,000 tablets in all polling stations. In addition, the judicial representative will also hold a tablet, while whoever wishes can be present and observe the process.”
“Each polling station will take the votes, but the amount that used to be recorded by hand will now be done by automatic notification from the Home Office to the official minister, so the result will be out much sooner,” added Mr. Pierrakakis.
The difference with the 2019 elections
The notable difference with the 2019 elections in terms of the transmission of results is that in that election the process was fully digitized in Athens, Thessaloniki and Patras, as well as in 30% of the polling stations in the rest of the territory.
This year, the 20,000 tablets in all polling stations will provide the Ministry of the Interior with all the necessary data in almost real time, with the aim of minimizing the waiting time for the results of the popular verdict.
The tablets will be equipped with the Secure Transmission of Results System (SRT), so that the registration of votes and crosses reaches the Ministry of the Interior without… intermediaries.
According to the drill that has been carried out, at approximately 8:00 p.m. the result will be disseminated to 25% of the territory.
The first image of the candidates’ crosses will be released around midnight. It is recalled that the polls will open at 7 am on Sunday May 21 and close at 7 pm.
Where I vote?
Voters can find out where they are voting from the corresponding gov.gr app “Learn where you are voting”.

According to the guide issued by the Ministry of the Interior, voters will identify themselves and vote, in addition to their identity card, with 4 other documents, which are the following:
- relevant temporary certificate from the competent authority,

- book of all Funds.
Voters can also go to the polls with their digital ID from the gov.gr wallet app that they have downloaded to their mobile phone.
Free crossings from toll stations
It is recalled that passage through the toll booths throughout the territory for the movement of voters will be free. Toll booths will be open from midnight on Friday May 19 and bars will close at 8am on Monday May 22.
The bailiffs will be able to pass freely through the toll booths from Thursday morning with the presentation of the relevant documents.
