An important step forward was taken for the large transportation project of the new terminal station of KTEL in Eleonas. By decision of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the environmental conditions of the project were approved, which paves the way for the implementation of the promotion. It will include 4 buildings, a conference center, a hotel, airport-type dock entrance control areas, 70 KTEL bus seats, shops and services, connection to the Metro.
The new station, which has a cost of more than 100 million euros, will be a modern gateway for long-distance road transport to and from Athens. It will replace the current outdated terminal facilities at Kifissos and Liosion. It will serve more than 40,000 passengers a day, which translates into 15 million passengers a year. This makes KSYL Eleonas the second most important transportation gateway in the capital after El. Venizelos Airport.
The construction of the new Central Intercity Bus Station (KSYL) is planned in an area of 66,420 m2 in the Eleonas area, within the Municipality of Aigaleo, which is surrounded by the side of the Athens-Lamia National Highway (Kifisos Avenue). , Iera Odos and Agia Calles Anne and Pieria.
KSYL will replace the two existing intercity bus stations (Liosion and Kifissou) and will be a large transport terminal and transfer hub, serving national intercity buses and international transport buses. The executing agency is the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
Connection with Metro and other means
It will be almost directly connected to the ELEONAS Metro station on line 3, facilitating the movement of travelers to other means of transport, that is, to the center of Athens, the port of Piraeus or the Eleftherios Venizelos Airport.
The new KSYL will be a large-scale transportation terminal and transfer center as it is planned to serve domestic intercity buses and international transportation buses. At the same time, there will be the possibility of direct access to the Athens-Lamia National Highway (L. Kifissou), to the main road network of Attica (Iera Odos, Orfeos, Ag. Polykarpou).
Within the KSYL there will be taxi ranks, parking areas and/or vehicle parking areas. of cars, exits/stops of Urban Buses (New OASA Bus Station in Eleonas on the Attiko Metro plot, area of approximately 4m in contact with the northern limit of the “Eleonas” Metro station). It is planned to move the KTEL departure points from Western Attica to the same location.
With the new station, the passenger experience is enhanced and will be more reminiscent of an airport-type area, with shops, restaurants, service areas, etc. The new space will have important bioclimatic elements and will essentially be a “green construction”.
The facilities of the new station
It will serve national long-distance buses and international transport buses. Through the construction of the new Central Intercity Bus Station (KSYL) in Eleonas, the objective is:
The KSYL building complex will be built on the site of the existing Attiko Metro depot. The new constructions at KSYL will be built for the most part as a height addition, building on the pre-existing construction of the warehouse and its expansion.
The total closed areas occupies 41,115m2, it has additional circulation areas of 2,765m2 while the total general building is 43,880m2. The underground spaces are 28,052m2, the additional spaces are 35,586m2. The total covered spaces are 13,605m2 and the exteriors are 25,489m2.
According to the decision, one of the main objectives of the next planning stages is the achievement of a “Nearly Zero Energy Building” (nZEB) character.
The composition of the building includes:
-Arrivals Hall – Passenger Departures (Central Station Hall, Ticket Office Area. Various Auxiliary Services, Passenger Traffic Control Area).
– Arrivals and Departures Area for National Destination Buses (vehicle traffic, pedestrian traffic).
– Baggage handling area (closed storage areas, auxiliary handling areas).
