Netflix has released the trailer for jonah hillupcoming documentary stutzwho introduces us to his friend and therapist phil stutz. Stutz helped Hill get through some incredibly difficult times and was inspired to share this story with people who might need to see it. The film focuses a lot on mental health.
Phil Stutz is one of the world’s leading psychiatrists. He “he has helped countless patients for 40 years, including world-class creatives and business leaders, and among them many skeptics of therapy. Directed by friend and patient Jonah Hill, the film explores Stutz’s life and guides the viewer through his signature visualization exercise, The Tools. When Hill sits down with Stutz for an unorthodox session that upends the typical doctor-patient dynamic, they bring The Tools to life in an experience that is humorous, vulnerable and ultimately therapeutic. Featuring a candid discussion of Stutz and Hill’s personal mental health journeys, along with the lighthearted banter of two friends from different generations, the film beautifully frames The Tools and the journey towards mental health in a way accessible to all, whether whether they are actively searching or not. aid.”
Hill previously detailed the document’s development process, his hopes for its reception, and explains why he won’t be involved in promoting the film in a personal letter. You can read that letter below:
I have finished directing my second film, a documentary about me and my therapist that explores mental health in general called Stutz. The whole purpose of making this film is to bring therapy and the tools I have learned in therapy to a wide audience for private use through an entertaining film.
Through this journey of self-discovery within the film, I have come to the conclusion that I have spent nearly 20 years experiencing anxiety attacks, which are exacerbated by media appearances and public events.
I am so grateful that the film is making its world premiere at a prestigious film festival this fall, and I can’t wait to share it with audiences around the world in the hope that it will help those who are struggling. However, you will not see me promoting this film, or any of my upcoming films, as I take this important step to protect myself. If I got sicker going out and promoting it, I wouldn’t be acting true to myself or the movie.
I usually cringe at letters or statements like this, but I understand that I am one of the privileged few who can afford to take time off. I will not lose my job while I work on my anxiety. With this letter and with “Stutz”, I hope it will be more normal for people to talk and act on these things. So that they can take steps to feel better and so that the people in their lives can understand their problems more clearly.
I hope that the work speaks for itself and I thank my collaborators, my business partners and everyone who reads this for their understanding and support. – Jonah Hill
stutz It hits Netflix on November 14th and I’m happy that Hill made this document. It seems like the kind of movie that could really do some real good in the world.
